The head of the Catholic church in China, Joseph Li, has begun his first official visit to Hong Kong at the invitation of the city's pope-appointed Roman Catholic cardinal, Stephen Chow. Li's visit is seen as a symbolic gesture that could strengthen the fragile relationship between China and the Vatican. The Vatican and China severed diplomatic ties in 1951, but in 2018, they signed an accord on the issue of bishop nominations. However, Beijing has violated the agreement.
